(excerpt from Chapter 1)
Lady Snowdrop sought out the third child, “How about you, Crocusbubble? What sticks out in your mind the most about this experience?”
Crocusbubble looked around the room to see if Stormfly, one of Thornbent’s other children, was there. He was sitting in the far corner with his arms crossed. He fixed her with a cold stare. “Um, I, um, I….” she swallowed and tried again. “I… learned that sometimes I’m right, even if someone else thinks I’m wrong.” She could feel the icy prickles of his glare on her back. “But I also learned that it is important to listen because I might learn something that is helpful, and not just pretend I’m listening. I learned that every family is different, and just like studying the inside of a leaf and finding that it looks different on the outside than on the inside, that families are also different on the inside from what they look like on the outside.” She scrunched her eyes up, fighting with herself to say the right thing instead of what she really wanted to say. “And I learned that it’s good to talk to someone when I am not sure which is which.”
