To me, the earth is alive – a living, breathing creator and manipulator of energy, minerals, vegetation, animals, gases, star stuff… All of these things have their own energies, some more conscious than others, but nonetheless possessive of a voice that can speak directly or in terms of their history on this planet. Humans impact not only their own lives, but the the very fabric of reality on a tangible and esoteric level. Scientists ‘discover’ consciousness, planning and thought in various species and even vegetal and fungal life forms. Creatures as varied as the worms that dig stories into a log, the ancient creatures that left fossils pregnant with history, the scat and tracks of wildlife, the scents of propagation, direction, fear, the communication among the roots of trees in a forest, all leave behind the tale of their journeys. What are the stories of the neutrinos that shoot through the earth, the meteorites that fall from the stars, the volcanoes that push up from the magma deep below our feet, the movement of the very face of our aging earth? Who are we to say the stones do not speak?
