The next morning she goes out to look at all the trees in the yard to try and find the one that is the ‘family’ tree. Each tree is different, one is like her father, another like her mother, but none are just like the whole family. Finally she figures out the puzzle of how all these trees make up her ‘family’ tree.

Ransburg has created a lovely introduction to genealogy in her first children’s book. The picture book is suitable in itself for very young children, although the enclosed activity is more suitable for a slightly older child. The Indiana Historical Society attached a blank family tree chart in the back with room for four generations. There is a space to paste a picture, and a place to write down the name with a little bit of information about the ancestor (like birth-death dates, place of birth, etc). The chart would make a nice wall poster for the child’s room when filled out.
