Together A Forest by Roz MacLean

Drawing Connections Between Nature’s Diversity and Our Own

Diversity is compared between the forest ecology and kids with diverse abilities. It is very poignant, making specific connections between them. “The Creek is thrumming after a big rain. In drier times, it will be shallow, slow, or still. Akash feels like the changing stream, with emotions that can be big, crashing and even overflow. Other times, he might feel more low, quiet, or steady.”  It also points out coping solutions many of children develop and explains why they help.  Many neurodivergent and physical disabilities find comparisons that will help not only the child understand but the adult who reads with them.

And with all that, it is not some dry attempt at making kids understand medical issues. It is written with simple wonder and big feelngs that will speak to even young children.

Brilliantly done!
