The Ink Witch by Steph Cherrywell

Becca Slugg, a transgender girl, lives a dreary life helping her mom run a motel. When a strange woman turns up and claims to be her aunt, things go horribly wrong. Turns out, her aunt is a witch who loses no time putting a spell on her mom. A spider who lives out back tells Becca she is also a witch and teaches her to do some simple magic spells. They take off on a wild road trip trying to connect with magical beings to concoct a remedy for Mom.

It’s a fun, fast paced story with a good blend of humor and suspense.  Witches, in this story, are not human but a separate type of magical creature. That may annoy some readers. But it’s worth looking past that to get to the journey and the surprise ending!
