A healer creates potions and salves for mythological creatures. But one day she encounters a dragon who is sad. Her preparations do nothing to relieve the condition, and she begins to doubt her skills. But the dragon tells her that just spending time together makes him feel better for a little while. It is a gentle story about illness, and the healing power of just being there for someone without trying to fix them.
The illustrations are beautiful and artistic, if rather abstract. It’s worth spending time looking at the details. However, the healer’s face is drawn simplistically like a cloth Raggedy Ann doll. It is incongruous to the beauty and intrigue of the monster pages. It’s my only complaint with this picture book as it continually pulled me out of the magic and imagination of each page, like finding a stop sign in a forest.
