Mr. Mergler, Beethoven, and Me by David Gutnick

Lovely book about a girl whose family moved China to Canada. They meet a kindly old man who recognizes the girl has a gift for music and offers to teach her for free. Beautifully written and illustrated. There is a page in the back dedicated to the real Mr Mergler who inspired this book.
